3/5/2001 a check of the microfilm records at the federal archives at 7300 S Pulaski, Chicago naturalization records do not show a Meyer Schwerdlin (soundex S263) , however, there is a Meyer Sverdlin (soundex S163) that was from Russia and naturalized 10/22/1898 in Cook County IL. no other Schwerdlin shows up in naturalization records thru 1950. Meyer and family immigrated 1892 and would have to have waited 5 years (1897) before being allowed to become citizens. Since the naturalization was in county court no additional information is expected to be obtained, except maybe Meyers exact signature (Schwerdlin or Sverdlin).
3/20/2001- Oct 1898 naturalization papers show 2 different signatures, but both Sverdlin, however, there is some Hebrew (Yiddish) under the signature and the "signature" says meaning Meyer Sverdlin. The English signatures appear to have been written by the sponsor Max Ginsburg and the Clerk of the court.
7/23/2006 Castlegarden.org. Family showed up arriving on the German Italia 3 Sept 1891 from Swinemunde. The computer listing showed the name as Schwertlin (D-M soundex is same as Schwerdlin). Arlington Heights, IL library had the microfilm passenger list . The hand written list was clearly spelled Schwerdlin.
Meyer 35, male labourer headed to Chicago from Petersburg with 2 pieces of baggage.
Chane 28, (computer listed as Cholme), my GGM Channah, AKA Anna
Issac 6, male, this matches my GGU Edward (Chaim Yitzhak)
Josse, 2 female, (I don't know who this is, but 1900 census shows 9 births and only 7 living, so I guess she died between 1891 and 1900) or this is my GGA Sarah, she was born in April of 1891 and would have been 5 months old.
Masche, 4 female, my GGA Mary (masche is pet form of mary or Miriyam in Russian)
Schepsel, 1, male ( I am guessing this is my uncle Joseph, since Sepp and Seppel are forms of Joseph in German (Channah's maiden name was Schwartz). He was born May 1889 and would have been 2 yrs old.
