About Michael (Big Pop) Spears Coon
Mr. Coon was born April 20, 1877, on the family homestead in the Oakville community, where he had lived all of his life. He was a retired farmer. His father, the late Washington L. Coon, was the 1st teacher in the 1st school in Oakville, around 1852. Mr. Coon was a member of the Orleans Election Board for 52 years; and served as Clerk of the Oakville School Board a half-century. He also served as Linn County Road Supervisor for that area for several years. He was married in September 1905, at the Albany United Presbyterian Church, to Clara Belle Crawford, who preceded him in death, in 1949. He was married Dec. 21, 1950, to Mary Acheson, who died in 1959.
