Notes for Michael Gilbert, Sr.: Data from "Ancestor of Austin Reed Spainhour" from Family Tree Maker Online

Possible Grandfather of Garvis Gilbert - Michael Gilbert (Sr), born c.1605, probably in England; died 10 Dec 1677 at Aldborough Parish, Yorkshire, England; married c.1632-35 at Aldborough Parish, Yorkshire, England to Mary Cooleston.

As a result of their research, William H & Fonda Waters Marcum, "The Way it Was with our Ancestors", (self-published), ©1982, concluded that the earliest known ancestors of Garvis Gilbert of Baltimore County, Maryland were Michael Gilbert (Sr) and his wife, Mary Cooleston, of Aldborough Parish, Boroughbridge, Yorkshire, England and that same opinion is shared by many other Garvis Gilbert family researchers.

Following are chronological excerpts for the life of Michael Gilbert (Sr) from Robert W Barnes, Baltimore County Families 1659-1759, Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore MD, 1989 (Genealogical data furnished by Mrs Harold Hannon of Bloomington, Illinois):

In 1621 Michael Gilbert (Sr) matriculated at Christ’s College, Cambridge University, and in 1624 he received his BA degree on the King’s visit (King James I).

From 1629 until 1677 Michael Gilbert (Sr) was Vicar of Aldborough, apparently having been deposed during the Commonwealth, 1653-1659, because the handwriting for entries in the Parish Registry was noticeably different.

Michael Gilbert, Sr. and three Churchwardens missused some charitable funds that had been donated to the poor of the Parish for several years. A trial was held on March 24, 1669. The three Churchwardens were directed to pay it all back and as Michael had no monies to speak of anyway the Court appointed a commitee to take over all finacial activites in the Church.

Michael Gilbert (Sr) died on 10 Dec 1677 and was buried at St Andrew’s Church, Alborough,Yorkshire, England.

Following are children of Michael Gilbert (Sr) according to William H & Fonda Waters Marcum, The Way it Was with our Ancestors, (self-published), ©1982 [from records at St Andrew’s Church and Michael Gilbert’s will, dated 10 Dec 1677, stored at Borthwich Institute of Historical Research, Dean and Chapter Vacancy Wills]; from Neil A Anthony, 14 Driscoll Dr, Framingham, Massachusetts 01701; and from Horace Elbert Gilbert, 1142 Highcliff Court, Cincinnati, Ohio 45224:

No source found for 1605 date and Yorkshire place of birth shown and used by others in on-line trees so it could be misleading. The Gilbert Name Study has searched parish baptism transcripts on Family Search, Find My Past, Ancestry and FreeReg for a 1605 baptism and found nothing to match.

The only Michael Gilbert appearing in baptism records in the 1602 to 1606 period is a Michael born in Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire with a father named Thomas. There were a lot of Gilbert families in Leicestershire in the 15/1600s and there is a Y-DNA match between descendants of Michael and a Gilbert with Leicestershire ancestors (see DNA section below). His first son was called Gabriel and after this son's death he has 2 more Gabriels. First daughter is called Lydia. These names could be a clue to Michael's parents' names perhaps. A Gabriel Gilbert was baptised 1 Oct 1581 in Repton, Derbyshire to father Gregory, and Repton is in an area for a large number of Gilberts at that time and with connections to Leicestershire.

His birth year is shown as 1603 based on his age being assumed to be about 18 when he entered Cambridge University.

His father remains unknown as noted by other descendants of Michael in the Gilbert DNA project who have researched their line back to him. It is not Raleigh Gilbert as some on-line trees have claimed without any sources; perhaps they had hoped to link their trees back to the Gilberts of Compton Castle, Devon as have other Gilbert researchers on other lines who have often incorrectly done this perhaps without realising that there were many other Gilbert families in England. Raleigh Gilbert's tree was drawn up in 1620 for the Visitation of Devon and does not show a Michael nor does Raleigh mention a Michael when he names his sons in his will.
