About Mietje (Marie) Hekster
Tante Marie, as I knew her was my mother"s (Flora Hony) Mother in law. She lost her son Iz (Flora"s husband) in the war. She and my mom survived by being hidden by a Dutch policeman and his family. Marie was a very capable woman. She was the head of the clan of her sisters, all tough capable women who had survived the war. Tante Marie was like a grandmother to me.....she had a wonderful sense of humor, but could be very stern. I have good memories of Marie making me laugh when I was a child and of going to the market with her. My parents and I moved to the USA when I was six years old, and after that time I only saw her periodically when my mom and I would visit Amsterdam every few years. I have one memory that stands out of walking down the street with her in Amsterdam and when she saw a Volkswagen she took off her high heel shoe and waked around the car scratching the paint with the heel, calmly put the shoe on again, took my hand and off we went and continued on our way. I was shocked at the time, but this woman had lost both her children in the concentration camps and as an adult I can comprehend her anger. I will always remember Marie and her sisters with fondness.....they were very special women.
