During this time, Milton's wife remained at the home farm in Missouri. Later she joined him in CA.

From an e-mail from Jesse Crisler dated 24 August 2005 Milton Monroe Johnson was b. in MO in Oct 1818, as confirmed by the 1900 censuses. In 1840 he was living in Union Township, Marion, MO, where he listed himself as "learned professional engineer", an ambitious title for a young man of only 22! Coming eventually to Jo Daviess Co, IL, he met the George Clinton Shattuck family there and married Clarissa, their fifth daughter and fifth child, on 22 Jun 1843. There first two children, George Clinton Johnson (named after her father) and Susan S. Johnson (named after his mother) were born in Illinois; they moved to Iowa, before 1846, where there [sp] next two children were born, Anna Ennis Johnson (Anna for her mother) and Daniel Monroe Johnson (Monroe for him). Their next move took them to the Wingville area of Grant Co., WI, where two more children were born, Scott L. Johnson and Mary M. Johnson (after Milton's sister). In WI they lived near Milton's mother Susanna who was living with her sons Lycurgus, Lucius and Junius; living next to Milton's mother was another brother, Angus A. Johnson. By 1853, Milton had moved his family again, this time back to Iowa; by 1860 they were living in Cox Creek, Clayton, IA, near many of Clarissa's relatives on her father's side of the family. In Iowa they had their last five children, Emily Aurilia (Aurilia from Clarissa's next older sister), Laura I. (Clarissa had a sister Imogene), Lydia P. (Clarissa had a sister Phylinda), Hattie and Clarissa A. (for Clarissa herself). By 1870 they had moved to Bogle, Gentry, MO, where as I mentioned earlier, they were living next to Lycurgus and his family; Milton's mother Susanna was living with Lycurgus and his eight children; and Clarissa's sister Aurilia's youngest son, Scott Peyton, was living with Clariss and Milton. What all this shows, I guess, is that the families of both sides kept in touch with each other. Sometime around 1875, their eldest son George Clinton Johnson moved his young family to Mendocino Co., CA, and settled there. When George returned to Illinois, a few years later, Milton traveled to CA and was living with George's wife and three sons at the time of the 1880 census; meanwhile, six of Clarissa's children had died; her sons had married. In 1880 she is living in Jackson, Nodaway, MO, with her married son Daniel and her youngest daughter Clarissa. Her son Scott had also moved to California in the early 1870s, but he died unexpectedly in 1877. Eventually Clarissa herself made the trip to CA, settling by 1900 in Table Bluff, Humboldt, CA, where they lived the remainder of their lives and are buried. Clarissa died in 1906, Milton in 1900. Theirs was a life typical of pioneering families in the latter half of the nineteenth century
