About Minnie Helen (Keeler) Shepard

Minnie and Charlie Posted 21 Jan 2018 by Jamie Swanson Minnie and her husband "Charlie" married on 24 Dec 1899 and immediately travelled by train to their new home in Mt. Hope, WA. She worked like a man to help her husband clear the land and raise up fine cattle. She rode a horse astride just like a man because there was mans work to be done but, no matter, she was always described as 'a lady'. When their first son was born in Feb of 1903, she became dedicated to caring for him. He was their only child. She was a wonderful cook and baker. She made bread and cinnamon rolls for her family. In 1931 Charlie and Minnie, son Don and his wife Geneva, moved to Portland from Spokane and purchased the Oregon Salesbook company, changing the name to the Shepard Salesbook company. The family worked together to manufacture business forms. In later life, she had pure white hair. She was an immaculately clean, meticulously groomed woman. Her mother was a milliner and she taught Minnie an appreciation of fine hats and elegant dresses and furs. She belonged to the WCTU and Eastern Star. She lived at: 5526 NE 39th, Portland, OR 97211. Her little 2 bdrm., 1 bathroom house, 950 sq ft w/full basement is valued at $216,781.00 in the winter of 2006, she would have fainted! She would never have believed her house would be worth that much money. It was a well-made, well-cared for home. She was my "Nana" and I loved her so much. Rest in peace, dear Nana.
