About Minnie Leonora Jackson

According to the book "John Edmonds - a very suitable man" it seems that Minnie was first married to David Moran in 1896 and they had 14 children. After the death of David Moran in 1917, Minnie cooked for a number of seasons at the Whangamumu whaling station.

Charles Christian Fletcher Jackson, a direct descendant of Fletcher Christian from Mutiny on the Bounty fame, was a crew member on "Hananui" - one of many boats in the Bay associated with whaling and deep sea fishing. He and Minnie knew each other for a number of years before they married in 1930 and settled in Russell.

When the celebrated author, Zane Grey, came to the Bay of Islands in 1926, Minnie cooked for his camp at Otehi Bay on Urupukapuka Island. Zane reportedly took a liking to Minnie and she subsequently joined his entourage when he sailed to Tahiti. There is a photo featuring Zane, Minnie and her second husband Charles (among others) in this book.
