(special thanks to Betty McDade for the following info) - Pierce Mason Butler married MIRANDA Juliette "Julia" Duval at Fort Gibson, Arkansas Territory in 1826. M. J., better known as "Julia Butler" (re: documents, et cetera) was born in Frederick Town, Maryland in 1803. Julia, along with three of her children, are buried in the Butler Family Vault in Willowbrook Cemetery, Edgefield Co., SC.

Notes for MIRANDA JULIA DUVAL: Miranda Julia DuVal was a daughter of Benjamin and Jemima Taylor DuVal. She married Pierce Mason Butler whom she met while visiting her brother Major Edward Washington DuVal, agent for the Cherokee Nation, at Fort Gibson, Arkansas. They were parents of Behethland, first wife of John Edmond Bacon; Emmala, wife of Abner Perrin; William Loudon; Pierce Mason, who married (1) Permelia Catherine Goode, and (2) Anna Burt; Andrew Pickens, who married Maria Burt; and Edward Julian Butler. The mother of Corporal Edward J Butler, Mrs Pierce Mason Butler, is said to be buried in the grave with her son. He was mortally wounded and when his body reached home his mother died of shock. She was Julia DuVal of Maryland, widow of Col Pierce Mason Butler, who was killed at Cherubusco while leading the Palmetto Regiment in the Mexican War. He is buried in the Butler Burying ground, in what is now Saluda County. In 1850 Edgefield Census, M J (female) is 48 yrs of age, born in Maryland, with property valued at $1,500 and 6 children at home.
