About Mitchel A. Garren
Widow's Pension Application claims that Mitchel A. Garren:
- married Sarah Ann Youngblood on 10 April 1864 and was father to Louisa (later called Eliza) Caroline Garren b. 25 April yh1865
- Enlisted in George W. Kirk's Union troop 3rd NC Mounted Infantry, Co. E on 18 Sept 1864
- Died in Hospital in Knoxville, TN of measles December 4, 1864
- of Shufordsville, Buncombe County, NC (although Sarah is of Cain Creek, Henderson County)
Anderson Garren (his father?) swore an affadavit on July 11, 1866, stating that he had served as 3rd Corporal in Company E. of the 3rd NC Mounted Infantry (U.S. A.) along with Allen Richard Case (2nd Sgt) and Private Mitchel A. Garren, who had died of measles on Dec. 4, 1864 while at Camp at Knoxville, TN, having just been released from the hospital.
Oddly, George W. Rhodes of Columbus, Polk County, NC was guardian of the minor child, with witnesses J. B. Rhodes and J. C.McFarland signing the document. Also R. N. Johnson and W. R. Lankford. Was Rhodes related to this family? Mitchel's mother Caroline must have been his sister.
