He rented a ranch of 130 acres near Bakersfield for a couple of years and then worked for wages. In 1888 he began to live on land which he eventually received a patent for. It was located in Section 7, Twp. 9N, Range 19W, S.B. Meridian near Fort Tejon.

Answer: On the 13th day of January 1858 in Watsonville, Santa Cruz County, State of California. Question: Where have you been residing since then? Answer: In Pajaro Valley near Watsonville. Question: Have you been residing there for six months preceeding the commencement of this action? Answer: I have and for a much longer period. Question: Has your husband been living with you up to the commencement of this action? Answer: He has not for the period of nearly 2 years. Question: When did he leave you? Answer: In January 1875. Question: Were you and he living together at that time? Answer: We were. Question: Where? Answer: Watsonville. Question: When he left do you know where he went? Answer: I do. Question: Where? Answer: Bakersfield, Kern County. Question: Has he ever offered or proposed to come back to you? Answer: No Sir.

Sallie mentioned that Monroe had rented a ranch and was farming on it since he had left. and then further... Answer: He has not funished or provided me with anything whatsoever.

Question: Since the 1st of January 1875, the time when he left you, upon what have you depended for your living and support? Answer: What I have been given to me by my friends and relatives....

From the examination of A.A. Libby: Answer: When he left the plaintiff in January 1875, he was an able-bodied man and he has continued so, so far as I have ever learned.

Question: What has he been doing since January 1875? Answer: He has been farming a ranch in Kern County of about 130 acres altogether, more than half of it under cultivation.
