About Morenu Baruch
(1) He cannot have been born in Suwalki, the town. There were likely no Jews living there before the early 1800s. But he was likely from the early that later became the Suwalki Gubernia, possibly from Wizjany.
(2) Could his wife have been a daughter of Shmuel from the family that took the surnames Kalwarjiski and later Margolis? The Winograd, Visanska, and Margolis (Rosenberg, Levine) families are related by multiple marriages and early immigration to South Carolina. I have hypothesized that his brother, Moshe married a granddaughter of Shmuel Margolis, daughter of Chaim Yehuda Margolis whose son took the surname Levine, Sulka being an extremely common Margolis female given name in the early 1800s.
(3) Did his son, Joseph Burke, take a patronymic from BER? Was his name Baruch or Ber?
He was known as "Morenu Baruch" -- our teacher, Baruch.
