About Morris Hollander

site called Jewishgen which provides various resources

including an interface to search Ellis Island records between 1892 and

1924. I quick look through and loh and behold, it appears that Morris

Hollander (brother of Joseph, so brother in law of Isaac and Rebecca

Walter) and his family went on a trip to the US in 1920. The ship

manifest and entry records turn up some intriguing information.

Morris' Family Information:

Order - Phillys (17, student 5'3" b London), Morris (41, merchant 5!5"

b Tolcha (Tulcea?) Roumania), Rebecca (33, wife 4'11" b Kiev Russia),

Rachel (10, child b London). From Chch NZ. Nearest friend or relative

in country where came from: Mr. Wimborne, 60 Goldhurst Terrace,

Hampstead, London

The most interesting part for me of the above is that Morris gave his

town of birth as Tulcea - it is very close to Galatz in the Danube

Delta, and was a shipyard town so it fits with Joseph working on ships

as a child.

The town it appears was also part of the Ottoman empire until 1878,

which would mean that if Joseph was born there, it would have actually

been Turkish at the time (although nearby Galati was of course

Moldovan and part of Romania).

Looking at the map of Romania it all fits - Braila is right next door to

Galati (Galatz). Simon, when you go to Romania, look up 61 Carol 1st Boulevard

in Braila, because that is where the Walters were living in Feb 1895. I am

still convinced that the Walters also lived in Galatz because I can still hear

Aunty Becky talking about Galatz.

I did some research on Karasubazar, which is where the envelope I have in my

possession came from. The modern name is Bilohorsk or Belogorsk and it is in

the Crimean peninsula. In the late 19th century it had a very significant

Jewish presence and there are several microfilm records around the world (but

unfortunately not in the UK or down our way)which I suspect would yield a lot

more information. The name means "white mountain".
