Moses was a native of Litchfield, Connecticut. As a young man, he worked in an uncle's store, where he began learning the mercantile trade. Moses married a niece of Ethan Allen, whose family had purchased significant land around Burlington, Vermont. In 1795, Moses visited the area, and in 1797 moved his family to Burlington.
Moses and his family were some of the earliest settlers in the area. His enthusiastic description of the opportunities in the area were credited with drawing other people from Connecticut to move to the area around Burlington.
