Moses Trader Shepherd was born 9 January 1820 in Franklin County, Ohio. He died 9 September 1866 in Spanish Fork, Utah. He was the third son of Peter Burr Shepherd and Mary Barker.
Moses was baptized into the Mormon Church in November of 1846 by Benjamin Clark. He was determined to join the saints on their trek west, but his wife, Eliza Jane, did not feel the same way and refused to go. He made his way to Winter Quarters without her and their two little daughters.
He accepted the practice of plural marriage and took a second wife while in Winter Quarters. He still missed Eliza and his two little girls very much and decided to go back to Indiana to persuade her to come back with him. He was successful in his quest. They sold their 32 acre farm in Delaware County to her brother-in-law, John Adamson and headed back to Iowa. When they arrived in Kanesville they learned that his second wife, Martha died during child birth.
Moses and Eliza along with their two children, Priscilla and Aaron traveled to Salt Lake with the Pioneers in 1852. They lost a son, Peter Burr Shepherd shortly after birth the 21st of July 1852 on the plains during the course of their travels.
Moses had 4 wives.
