About Moses Swett

When in 1683, under Cranfield, the public grievances became insupportable, and the people were driver to making a vigorous stand for their liberties, by an address to "the King's most Excellent Majesty," presented by Nathaniel Weare, their chosen ambassador, we find the signatures of Moses (although a very young man at the time), his brother Benjamin and their grandfather Peter Weare.

Benjamin was commissioner in Hampton in 1665 and 1668; selectman in 1665, 1669, 1675. In 1670, he received a grant for 100 acres of land. His real talent lay in the military arts; his fondness for martial life developed early and was much prized by his townsmen.

He was a very active man, taking a warm interest in organizing the parish of Hampton Falls.

Lt. Swett was one of the selectmen of Hampton in 8/1693 and in 3/1712. He was called Captain Swett when he was selectman in 1717. He also served as a representative to the Provincial Assembly in 1693, 1708 and perhaps at other times.

In 1722, he drew a half share in the fifth division in right of Richard Swain. His will, made 4/15/1719, when he was "sick of body, but sound of mind," was proved 1/19/1731. He left a large estate.
