About NN Bayley

from John1 Bayly of Bromham, Wiltshire, and Essex County, Massachusetts by Clifford L. Stott, AG, CG., FASG. link

John1 Bayly, of Bromham, WIltshire, was born say 1586, and died in Newbury, Massachusetts, on 2 November 1651. John married at Broham in July 1611, ANN BAYLY. She was buried there on 27 August 1659, having steadfastly refused to join her husband in New England for more than two decades. The parents of neither John nor Ann have been determined with certainty

The identification of Ann Bayly, wife of John1 Bayly, has similar difficulties Broham parish registers list three Ann Bayly baptisms between 1580 and 1595, all daughters of WIlliam Baylys:

  • Anne, daughter of William Bayly, bp. 14 Jan. 1586/7, possibly the Anm Bayly bur. 0_ 1588
  • Anne, daughter of William Bayly bp. 5 Jan. 1588/9
  • Anne, daughter of William Bayly bp. 16 March 1588/9

The marriage of two William Baylys are founf in Broham reisters maried Agnes Ballard on 28 June 1578; the other married Anne Squi__ September 1578. The names Anne and Agnes were frequently interchanged _ time.

Hey All, more work to do. Jane may have married a William Knight in 1587, but it wasn't the widow of Elizabeth Wild. That William died in early 1569/1570. (1569 per his calendar, 1570 per our modern calendar) Elizabeth died a couple months later. This is all proved by his Will that probated April 1569/70. These Romsey Knights were probably all related and were pumping out babies and naming them after the same kinfolk. Making all quite confusing. Don't rely on any family trees you see as being correct. Rely on Wills, probate court records, church records, parish records, family bible entries, deeds and any other periodicals written/transcribed from that time. I have seen many trees (on-line) that are wrong. When you see dates that don't make sense, your correct about it.

I've seen posts that William Knight and Elizabeth Wild's first born was a son, Phillip. I don't think so. Once again William's Will stated "my sons William and Nicholas" no mention of Phillip. The first born son would surely not be omitted.

Finally, I have never seen positive evidence of where our Romsey Knights came from. As far as I can see, This line has been in Romsey since at least circa 1440. The Wills of the earlier Knights do mention their "Mother Church" as Trinity of Winchester. This Grand church predates all other area churches by hundreds of years. Being the only church in the area, for centuries, it was everyone's mother church. Winchester was also the capitol of England in medieval times. Our Knight-line may have come from there, but it was before 1440. posted by Don Knights.
