The family name is consistently listed as "de Canouville" on the Battle Abbey roll compilation, the Dives-sur-Mer plaque, and the Falaise Roll, which suggests that the family actually originated, not from Canville-les-Deux-Eglises (arrondissement Rouen, canton Yvetot) as popularly thought and taught, but from Canouville, arrondissement Dieppe, canton Saint-Valery-en-Caux. (Canouville is apparently much older, with archaeological remains dating back to Gallo-Roman times.)
