About Nancy Hopper

Nancy Campbell, wife of Gilliam Hopper, was born about 1772 in North Carolina, and died 1862 in Illinois at the age of 90.

Disputed Origins

  • There is no proof of maiden name of Campbell.
  • Her mother is said to have been a Nancy Campbell, died at 108 years old, “of the Royal Family of Ireland.”
  • “She was most likely the daughter of William Campbell and Lydia Campbell.” There is no supporting evidence seen for this claim.
  • Parents also seen as Archibald Campbell & Rebecca Kirk (Campbell). There is no evidence seen for this claim.

She married Gillum Hopper, later known under the alias John Brown. They had at least nine children:

Her husband Gillum, alias John Brown, allegedly killed David Stockstill in 1828 with a rifle over a land boundary dispute. A partly fictional book, Dock Brown, the Outlaw of Grayson County was written about what happened. After the murder, Gillum left home and never returned.

She may have died 1862 in Adams, Illinois.
