About Nanning van Foreest
Nanning van Foreest (Alkmaar, 1529 - Den Haag, 3 oktober 1592) was onder andere vroedschap, secretaris en pensionaris van Alkmaar, raadsheer van de Hoge Raad van Holland, Zeeland en West-Friesland, gedeputeerde ter Staten-Generaal voor Holland, en gecommitteerde van de Unie van Utrecht.
hIJ werd in 1546 vicaris en in 1548 student te Leuven, in 1572 pensionaris van zijn stad en later lid van de Hooge Raad, een der leiders van het verzet en vertrouwensman van Willem de Zwijger; treedt als zodanig niet in het openbaar op vóór 1566, in welk jaar hij met Dirk en zijn jongste broer Jan van Foreest, een request indient om de Minderbroederskerk te Alkmaar voor de gereformeerde religie te bestemmen. Foreest of Nanning was born the son of Jorden of Foreest (1494-1559) and Margaret, daughter of Nanning Beyers. In 1563 he entered the marriage with Christina Queeckel, who died a year later. On 13 April 1566 he married to Maurik Maria van Hattem (1533-1624). They had five children: three sons and two daughters. His youngest son Nanning would in his footsteps as director of the city of Alkmaar and the province of Holland .
Foreest of Nanning received a Catholic education at the Alkmaar Latin School . In 1548 he began to study rights at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven , and his doctorate there in 1554 . Back in Alkmaar, he joined the city council. He was also a member of the influential Catholic fraternity of the Guild Pape, that Our Lady altar kept in the St. Lawrence Church .
Together with his brothers Dirk and January of Nanning Foreest played a leading role in the Dutch Revolt .
