Frank-Spanjaard, Naphtalie Herman and Charlotte

Naphtalie Herman Frank was born in Veendam on the 13th of May, 1860. His parents were Lazarus Frank (Wildervank, 5.4.1830 – Zwolle, 22.1.1919) and Judik Sanders (Sneek, 4.7.1839 – Veendam, 24.12.1915). Naphtalie Herman was the second out of ten children. He married in 1890 in Zwolle Charlotte Sara Spanjaard (Borne, 9.8.1869 – The Hague, 2.3.1939), daughter of David Spanjaard (from Borne) and Dina Prins (probably from The Hague). Charlotte was the second out of five daughters.

Naphtalie Herman was a well-known doctor. He became a surgeon. Towards the end of the 19th century Naphtalie became Head of Surgery of the Roman Catholic Hospital at De Weezenlanden. After Naphtalie and Charlotte got married they lived on the Eekwal in Zwolle.

Naphtalie and Charlotte had four children, all born in Zwolle:

1. Dina Henriette Frank was born on the 3rd of April, 1891. She passed away when she was 9 years old, on the 1st of September, 1900. She had undergone an appendix operation, but something had gone wrong with the anesthetics. Naphtalie – who was a surgeon himself – took this to heart very much, and ever since he specialized in stomach operations.

2. Leonie Frank, born on the 31st of January, 1893.

3. Dora Hermance Frank, born on the 18th of August, 1901.

4. Leonard David Frank (Leo), born on the 9th of October, 1903.

Charlotte was a very progressive lady for her time. She was the first woman ever serving in the Town Council of Zwolle. She also supported good causes in the field of health and went out to collect money for such causes.

The children grew up in Zwolle.

The Frank family left Zwolle in 1920. Naphtalie Herman turned 60 by then, he stopped working and Charlotte and he spent their last years in The Hague. Naphtalie Herman Frank passed away there on the 6th of February, 1932. His wife Charlotte passed away on March 2, 1939.

Leo met his future wife, Beatrix (Trixie) van Lier in Amsterdam in 1928, where she attended a school. Trixie was born in 1910. She was only 18 years of age when they met. Leo and Trixie married in 1931, starting their married life in Amsterdam.

They had three sons, all born in Amsterdam: Nicolaas Herman (1932) , Steven Floris (1935) and Carel Felix Frank (1937). Thanks to Steven and Carel particulars of part of the family could be established. Trixie was born and educated in Eastbourne, Sussex (England). Her father had emigrated from Holland to England in 1895. Thanks to this step probably she and her sons survived the Holocaust. Leo (lawyer and attorney) got a medal of the Dutch queen and was nominated 'Knight of the House of Orange'.

He received this award in 1936, at the age of 33, due to his expertise in formulating laws on mortgages etc. against the Nazi's.

Before and during the Second World War Leo was director of a charity organization which helped refugees escaping to Holland from fascist Europe. When the Germans occupied Holland, they forced the charity organization to merge into the Joodse Raad (Jewish Council). Leo joined a secret group that procured false papers for escapees and others. He was betrayed and arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned in Amersfoort. Trixie dressed as a man, persuaded a cleaner to take his place, and that is how she managed to meet Leo there.

Leo was brutally tortured in Amersfoort, and in a terrible state he was sent to the gas chambers in Auschwitz. There he died on the 21st of January 1943, at the age of only 39.

Leo's name appears on the 'List of Honor of Dutch fallen Patriots 1940-1945', of which – according to Frank - a page is turned every day in the Dutch Parliament. He received this award because of his early active participation in resistance groups Trixie and the three boys survived Westerbork and Terezin. As Trixie was born in England, the Germans wanted to keep some of the English citizens alive for exchange of hostages.

Therefore they were flown back by the R.A.F. from Pilsen to London Airport in May 1945. Leonie Frank married Herman Jacobson (Amsterdam, 11.3.1882 – Wassenaar, 3.8.1961). They had three children (Louise Charlotte, Jacob Alexander and Charlotte Dina). Leonie passed away in Vevey (Switzerland) on the 22nd of August, 1979.

Dora Hermance Frank married in The Hague on the 26th of October 1922 Herman Frijda (Amsterdam, 22.7.1887 –Auschwitz 3.10.1944), they had three children (Leo Herman, Jetta Sandra and Nico Henri). Dora passed away in Amsterdam on the 5th of February, 1997.

Nicolaas Frank (the eldest son of Leo) emigrated to Australia, his brothers Steven and Carel live in England ever since 1945.
