Biography

Nathaniel Johnson, son of Joseph and Hannah, was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts on 15 Aug 1683.[1] He must not be confused with another Nathaniel Johnson, son of John Johnson and Lydia Clement, born on 31 October 1691 in Haverhill. This Nathaniel Johnson married Mehitable Guile. Probate and land records make it absolutely clear that the son of Lt. John Johnson married Mehitable Guile, while the son of Joseph Johnson married Ruth Guile. He is also not the same as Nathaniel Johnson, son of John Johnson and Bethia Reade, born on 15 May 1673 in Woburn, Massachusetts.
Nathaniel Johnson married Ruth Guile in Haverhill, Massachusetts in 1714.[2]
Nathaniel Johnson was the youngest surviving son and executor of his father's will.[3] He inherited from his father the primary homestead and house; his three older and married brothers (Thomas, Joseph and William) had already their share of Joseph Johnson's property in land grants in 1700. The homesteads of the four brothers were then side-by-side. Thomas, William and Nathaniel also owned land in the adjoining town of Amesbury. In deed dated 20 July 1720, he gifted land which had come to him on the death of his brother John to his nephew James Johnson (eldest son of Joseph); this deed names his wife Ruth and is among the evidence that this Nathaniel is the one who married Ruth Guile.[4]

Married: 1st - Ruth Guile before 1715 when their first child was born, presumably in Haverhill, Massachusetts.[2] Ruth died on 11 November 1729 in Haverhill.[5]
Married: 2nd - Abigail Green on 7 June 1733 in Haverhill; she was the widow of Avery Sanders.[2]

There two Nathaniel Johnsons born in Haverhill, one on 15 August 1683, to Joseph Johnson and Hannah Tenney, and the other on 31 Oct 1691 to John Johnson, Jr and Lydia Clement. [10]

There were two marriages: One Nathaniel married Ruth Guile (before 1715), and the other Nathaniel married Meheteble Guild, 19 December 1715.[11]
