Caton – An item of interest in our town worth recording is the sudden advent of diphtheria, which has made its appearance in on of our most healthy localities. Of Mr. Dubois Schutt’s family of eight children six have been suddenly stricken down, and within a week two have died, one dying last Friday and one this morning. Three more are, at the present writing, lying in a critical condition, and are not expected to live. There are others, in different localities and within the time mentioned, suffering with the same disease which seems so suddenly to have made its appearance. The most skillful help that could be had has been procured, but to no purpose thus far. To what extent we are doomed to meet the dreaded scourge is but a question of time. Mr. Schutt has the sympathy of the whole community in this his sad affliction. The family, heretofore, has been remarked as the healthiest in town. Mrs. Bubois Schutt of Canton, Pa., lost five children last week, all of diphtheria. During the war she lost three from the same disease, making eight in all. Source: The Waverly Advocate, Waverly, N.Y., Friday, April 15, 1881. Inscription: CHILDREN OF DUBOIS & JENETT SCHUTT
