Life Sketch

Nicholas de Vaux was born about 1642 in France. Nicholas married Marie/Mary Sy/Sie/See in the French Congregation at Mannheim, Germany on 10 July 1667.

In about 1675, Nicholas and Marie left Germany, lived for a brief time in England, and then immigrated to New York with Sir Edmund Andros.

Nicholas and Marie had five children together: Abraham, John, Esther, Mary, and Susanna.

After some attacks by natives in New England, the settlers of New York became hyper-vigilante. They organized townsmen to stand guard on Night Watch. Nicholas served as watchman on 6 December 1675.

In 1676, Nicholas was listed on a tax list. On 30 August 1676, Nicholas signed a petition to divide the unappropriated land in the Harlem Patent.

On 15 November 1677, Nicholas sued Pierre Cresson, after a business deal fell through.

In late November 1677, Nicholas was one of those who were busy cutting 5,000 palisades for New York City.

By 1678, Nicholas had moved to Bergen, Hackensack, New Jersey, and became one of the organizers of the French Church of Kinkachemeck.

In Bergen, Nicholas lived on the eastern side of the Hackensack, extending from New Bridge northward beyond Oradell, and eastward one and a quarter miles.

In about 1706, at the age of 64, Nicholas de Vaux married Margaret Jans, widow of Jacques Button.

After Nicholas' death, Margaret married a third time, to Hendrick Cammega.

Five years later, Nicholas de Vaux died in Hackensack, Bergen, New Jersey, and was buried in the Old French Burial Ground.
