origin of our "McCarty" ancestors is probably in Ireland where the surname
"McCarty" is among the twenty most common and ranks third in County Cork.
A son-in-law of Nicholas McCarty, Captain Richard Chenoweth, was
prominent in the early affai rs of the area. He was the first sheriff of
Kentucky County,
Virginia and a Captain in the frontier forces.
It would appe ar that he lived in Hampshire County, (West)
Virginia, then
in Pennsylvania, before locating in Jefferson County, Kentucky.
Michael J. O'Brien in his book, The McCarthys in Early American History,
Garnier & Co., Charleston, SC, 1921, mentions several of this name but
does not establish a f irm connection with any. During the Revolutionary
War
Thomas McCarty, son of Nicholas, enlisted at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
After the War Thomas settled in present day Oldham County, Kentucky.
The positive presence of Nicholas in Kentucky can be dated from 1776 as a
certificate for 1000 acres of land in the Ditrict of Kentucky was issued
21 April 1780 attesting to the marking and improvement of this real estate
in 1776 by or on the behalf of Nicholas McCarty. This was on the waters of
Floyd's Creek a few miles, 6 or 7, from Linn's Station, Jefferson County,
Kentucky.
Nicholas McCarty was killed by Miami Indians in November 1791 in the
battle known as St. Cl air's Defeat in the Northwest Territory. His
widow, Mary,
remained in Jefferson County through the 1810 census and later in Shelby
County, Kentucky where she is buried.
