Nicolaas's wife, Maria Zeegers, was born on 25 June 1700. Her father, Heinrich, died early in 1703, leaving his widow with a young child. Maria was given in marriage to Nicolaas van den Heuvel when she was only 13 years old, but the couple did not have children till she was 19 years old, and then they had at least 7 children between 1719 and 1730 (list not exhaustive/confirmed):
1. Elizabeth Catharina (17 September 1719)
2. Helena Maria (25 May 1721)
3. Johanna Petronella (30 May 1723)
4. Aletta Hendrina (25 February 1725) x c.1745 Barend van Niekerk
5. Margaretha Anna (24 November 1726)
6. Anna Elizabeth (25 September 1728)
7. Nicolaas (03 December 1730)
Nicolaas van den Heuvel was an upstanding citizen and served four times on the Church Council at Stellenbosch. It was he who laid the proposed plan for the new church before the heemraden in March 1717. When the new cross-structured church was inaugurated, Nicolaas served as elder. He lived in a Kolonieshuis from 1713-1717. Nicolaas bought the farm Bethlehem from Claas van de Westhuizen, which purchase was registered on 24 April 1719. In 1723, records show that he also owned the farms Parel Vallei and Paardevlei, By 1725 Nicolaas had moved to the Cape Town district. By all standards Nicolaas was very prosperous. There is mention that Nicolaas suffered from poor health in 1717, but he lived another 15 years and died on 26 April 1732, leaving a widow with at least 7 children to run three farms. He was laid to rest within the Stellenbosch church.
