Nikolai Ivanovitch Demidoff took part in the war between Sweden and Russia 1808-1809, in which Sweden lost Finland to Russia. As commander of the township of Vasa in 1808, he ordered the massacre of 200 civilians. In 1809 he was named commander of the Åland Islands, and in 1810 military commander of Finland. He was promoted to General of the Infantry in 1823.
