About Noadiah Graves

Noadiah Grave(s) Sr. lived in Guilford,New Haven (now Madison) Co., CN but he and his wife, Sarah,was in Durham, New Haven (now Middlesex) Co. by 1720. and there first child was born there. He was named a full share Proprietor of Durham in the 1724 List Of Proprietors. (His grandfather, John Grave(s) Sr., was a Proprietor--a Grantee of land from the Connecticut Legislature-- in Durham, but was an absentee owner, or non-resident, among the original 34 Proprietors. Another Proprietor was Joseph Coe, of Stamford, CN., grandfather of Lois Coe who married his son Rosswell Sr. Coe. On April 12, 1744, Noadiah Sr., with two others of Durham, bought 500 acres of land in Bedford (now Granville) MA., his name appearing on a list of 79 settlers of the township, on June 20, 1750 (The township had 73 dwellings). He returned to Durham, CN. where he died the next year, 1751. His tombstone reads In Memory of Mr. Noadiah Grave who died July 24, 1751 in His 57th Year". His Wife, Sarah's, tombstone reads "In Memory of Mrs. Sarah, Wife of Mr. Noadiah Grave, who died May the 10th 1777 in the 85th year of her age." After his death, his children David, Noadiah Jr., Rosswell Sr. and Elizabeth Graves Sheldon bought and divided 100 acres in Bedford--son Rosswell Sr. settled there about 1760. Like other towns of the time in Connecticut, Durham had slaves and when the slaves married they did so with the consent of their owners. Noadiah owned a slave, named 'Caesar' ,a child, who was baptized at Durham June 20, 1742.
