Norman schooled at Glamis Castle.(His mother's maiden name was Davidson This is still being debated.. Norman emigrated to South Africa in the early 1890s'. He joined his two brothers Crawford and Hector in their construction company Crawford and Hector bought Norman a handgun and a donkey for him to travel to Sothern Rhodesia Norman and his companion travelled to Bulawayo but en route both contracted m\alaria\. They arrived in Bulawayo 1893 and were treat ed at Mother Patrick's tent hospital for malaria. His c/companion died. He worked in Bulawayo as a carpenter. Returned to South Africa in 1895 Entered and exited Southern Rhodesia via Plumtree. He planned to buy a farm in the Plumtree area when he returned. He joined South African Railways and became an Engine Driver which included the Boer War era. He returned to Scotland to marry Catherine. They were married McConnHolmes (Granny). They were married at her mother's bedside the early 1900s'. Norman returned to South Africa a few later on his own and developed appendicitis on board ship. He was operated on in South Africa and sent Catherine to sell up and come to South Africa. They then went to Krugersdorp where Norman.s older brother///Hector and wife May lived. This was where the youngest son Alexander Holmes was born in 17/04/1910. Catherine M. Holmes was born 29/08/1877. She was one of three and four brothers born in Glasgow. Her father owned a steel foundry and was a Freemason. First three sons were born to them in Largs, Scotland was Crawford Fletcher. Norman bought the farm 'Hillocks' ' in Plumtree. The family arrived on Hillocks in August 1911. kindly neighbors helped to construct a pole and dagga' house. Inside the walls were covered in newspaper. The first two years brought drought and floods..For the third year, Norman went to work with West Rand Consolidated Mines Ltd. as an engine driver//hoist operator. Catherine plus children. ned remained on the farm Bushill Farm owned.by the Plumtree School Headmaster Hammond..Norman left Roodepoort Mine on 14/11191 and returned to Southern Rhodesia. Fletcher attended Plumtree as a boarderi in 1915 aged 10 years. He had been taught the three 'Rs' reading, riding and rithamatic.
