Obadiah Smith's body was found on 20 Aug 1680 in the narrows of the Nissequogue River; it is not known whether this was an accidental drowning or was caused by an Indian who accompanied him on a hunting trip. Letters of Administration were granted on 24 Apr 1682 to his father and the inventory of his estate, listing cattle, swine, and horses, 100 acres of land west of the Nissequogue, and person property amounted to 143 pounds 10 shillings.
He is supposed to have been the first white person buried in Smithtown, with a tombstone resting horizontally on low foundation walls of rick, seen in the ancient burial ground on Nissequogue Hill some 50 years ago. Its inscription was Obadiah, son of Richard and Sarah Smith, born March.
