Balling was trained as a painter in Christiania, Berlin (1843-45), Copenhagen (1846-48) and Paris (1854).

1848-1850, a Norwegian officers for the Danish, in the Schleswig-Holstein war.

In 1856 he emigrated to the United States. - 1856 (14 Nov) Hamsen Balling (33yrs - born in Norway) arrived in New York from Liverpool, England on the ship "Albert Gallatin - occupation: painter.

Spring 1861 when civil war erupted, he was captain of a company of Scandinavian volunteers (Capt. Ole P.H. Balling of the 1st Regiment, New York Infantry, Co. I), later promoted to lieutenant colonel (Lt. Col. Ole P.H. Balling of the 145th Regiment, New York Infantry). When he was wounded at Fredericksburg and incapacitated as a soldier, he returned to his profession as a portrait painter.
