About Ona Guess

Marriage Record citation Probate Index Citation

Thanks to Jamie Schnaufer and her research, we have marriage record in Gwinnett, GA for Sanford Saxon and Susan.

Susan Ganes and Santford Saxon, 27 Dec 1846.

SOURCE: "Georgia, Marriages, 1808-1967," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FWQ9-7M9: accessed 21 Feb 2013), Santford Saxton and Susan Ganes, 27 Dec 1846. [No image]

She also found a Probate record in Gwinnett, GA:

Probate Records ph #770-822-8000

Book 4; Page 71, Recording with no original document Sanford Saxon Susan Ganes, 27 Dec 1846.

Is this our Sanford Saxon? I do not know since I am not able to look at any other records in the Gwinnett County Courthouse. Most every time we have found Sanford, he has used "S.S. Saxon".

Is this Susan Ganes another spelling for Gaines/Gains, or GIST GUEST GUESS? Jamie stated the gentleman on the phone giving her the record index information stated these were from microfilm, which was not in good condition and the best they could decipher was "GANES" but it may be "GIST GUEST GUESS".

Paratine was born 8 Aug 1862 in Atlanta, GA. Sanford S. Saxon was married to Susan Guess from 1846 until her death in Aug 1862, Atlanta, GA. During the genealogy study of Paratine and her father, it now appears that Maranza Anna Adams may actually have been her step-mother. On 17 May 1863, he married Maranza in Butler Co, GA. Paratine was 9 mos old. The other children born to SS. Saxon and Susan Guess were William Thomas Saxon (1847 – 1926), James Saxon (1851 – ?), Nancy Elizabeth Saxon (1853 – 1928) and Robert Saxon.

Paratine would not speak of her Native American heritage as she grew-up during a time when "half-breeds" were looked down upon. As far as research has shown, there is no Indian blood in the Adams line however, Susan Guess was the daughter of Thomas K. Guess and Ona Shawnee. Since "Shawnee" is not a surname, it lends credibility to the belief that the Native American blood does come down through the original mother.
