About Osborne Frank Goreham

Uncle Frank was appointed a "Mate" in the Royal Naval Canadian Volunteer Reserve on 9 June 1917. He served on patrol boats chasing subs in the Atlantic. In February 1919 he received his certificale of competency as a Mate and was then employed as 1st Mate on board the British schooner "Adonis" of Bridgetown from 6 August 1919 to 20th September 1920. During World war 11 he was employed by the Department of Transport from 15th October 1941 to 23 November 1943 as Chief Officer of the "Laurentian". He was appointed Master of this vessel on November 23rd until 11 January 1946 when his resignation was accepted. During the summers of 1943, 1944, and 1945 he was Acting Marine Superintendant at Goose Bay, Labrador. A copy of a letter {classified secret] dated 12 june 1945, Ottawa, outlined his assignment as Commodore captain of the "Laurentian" and the vessels which accompanied her to Goose Bay, Labrador. the "Laurentian" was to be used as "docking and undocking vessels to be sent there, and in placing aids to navigation in that locality, and in the transfer of Army personnel". Frank's resignation was due to heart problems.
