ATLANTA: Oscar Drachman, put tree atop Rich's by PATRICIA NEWMAN
Thank Oscar Drachman for Rich's towering Christmas tree.
Mr. Drachman was a founder of Superior Riggings & Erecting Co. Inc., which annually hoists the giant community tree atop a Rich's building.
As president of Superior Riggings, Mr. Drachman watched over the project like a hawk.
"He was always down there to watch. He made sure his workers didn't damage the side of the store or break any windows," said his wife, Joyce Drachman of Atlanta. "They had to center the tree in the middle of the road. They would close down the street, and the crane would pull in to hoist the tree up."
Every Thanksgiving night, Mr. Drachman and his wife watched the lighting of the tree. "We would sit on top of Rich's men's department and watch. They would serve us hot chocolate," said Mrs. Drachman.
Lawrence Oscar Drachman, 91, of Atlanta died of complications from pneumonia Sunday at St. Joseph's Hospital. The body was cremated. The memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Theosophical Society. National Cremation Society is in charge of the arrangements.
Since 1955 when Superior Riggings & Erecting was founded, it has been lifting heavy structures and setting up machinery across metro Atlanta. As Atlanta grew, so did Superior Riggings.
"During the expansion of the airport, we set up all the jet ways for the new concourses. And when Six Flags came to town, we installed most of the rides," said Charles "Woody" Wood of Fayetteville. "We did a lot of work downtown. We put a lot of the mechanical equipment on the top of buildings around Five Points."
While Mr. Drachman was at the helm of Superior Riggings, the company helped with the expansion of the General Motors plants in Doraville and Lakewood, said Jake Heaton of Fayetteville.
Anticipating a war in the 1940s, Mr. Drachman, who had been in the ROTC horse cavalry in college, joined the Army. When war broke out, he was in the Army Corps of Engineers and was sent to Great Britain.
"He served under General Patton," said his son, Steve Touchton of Woodstock. "He was with an engineers regiment. He helped build some of the first bridges for our troops to cross the Rhine River."
He retired as a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserves.
Friends delighted in receiving gifts that Mr. Drachman created from gold and silver. "He would make wedding presents and little gifts, rings, bracelets and earrings," said Mrs. Drachman.
Survivors include a brother, Allen Drachman of Phoenix.; another son, Daniel Drachman of Moscow; and five grandchildren.

Oscar Drachman, age 91 of Atlanta, died December 7, 2003. Born October 26, 1912 in Tucson, AZ to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Arizona Drachman. He attended Tucson and Lutheran Church Elementary Schools and graduated from Tucson High School. He attended the University of Arizona at Tucson, majoring in Civil Engineering, was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, and graduated with a BS-CE in 1935. While there he enrolled in ROTC-Horse Calvary and received 2nd Lieutenant Commission in the U.S. Army. In 1935 after graduation, he went to Louisiana and was doing engineering work in the Louisiana oil fields at the outbreak of World War II. He served over four years during the war in both the European and Pacific Theaters and retired as Lt. Col. Army Reserves. He was instrumental in the founding of Superior Rigging and Erecting Co., where he served as President before retiring. He later went back to work for Southern Machinery Erectors, Inc., where he served as President (10 years) before retiring. He is one of the founders in Atlanta of the Association of Steel Erectors and Crane Operators, Inc., an organization of sub-contractors in the Atlanta area and is still a member. He was a past member of Decatur Presbyterian Church, had served as Assistant Scout Master, Boy Scouts, has been a member of the Theosophical Society in Atlanta for 35 years. Survivors include his wife Joyce R. Drachman; sons, Steve Touchton of Woodstock, Georgia and Daniel Drachman of Moscow, Russia and five grandchildren. A memorial service and reception will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2003 at 2:00 p.m at the Theosophical Society with a graveside service at 3:30 p.m. at Arlington Memorial Park with full military honors.
