"Death of a District Pioneer"

Another link with the district's early history was severed when a well known member of a local pioneer family died last Wednesday at the age of 83.

He was the late Oscar Emil Habel, who came to the district with his family in 1897.

Mr. Habel had been living with a son Jim on Kangaroo Island since last year, and died in the hospital at Kingscote.

After moving to Loxton in 1897 from Dutton in the Barossa Valley, the Habel family lived near the bend in the river west of the town, and subsequently named Habel's Bend.

The late Mr. O.E. Habel purchased land near the town when in his late teens and farmed this property until about five years ago.

During the 1920s and 1930s he was also purchasing agent for wheat merchants at the Tookayerta railway siding.

A member of the Anglican Church, Mr. Habel was a member of the Parochial Council, Centre Church Council and held office as church warden for 15 years.

He had a long association with the A and H Society, first as a section convener and in latter years as the Society's patron, and was an active member of the Loxton Bowling Club for nearly 37 years.

A family funeral service was held in Adelaide last Thursday.
