EARLY HISTORICAL EVENTS IN THE DELAWARE VALLEY by John T. Bradley (A series of historical articles of interest to everyone who sides in the Delaware section of the county). In, 1858 John BAIRD, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Phillip and Thomas O'Reilly, of Cochecton Valley, associated and purchased what remained of Lot 61. This included Big Island and adjacent timber land in New York state amounting to 1700 acres. The cutting of the big pines soon followed. Thomas O'Reilly was the stationary engineer in the business of the firm and at death of the O'Reilly Brothers the firm of Baird and O'Reilly ceased and the lumber interest passed to the sons of Thomas, James and William. Thomas had his residence on the Cochecton side of the Delaware close to the Bridge. The dwelling stands today. The breakup in the river in 1902 injured one of the annexes although in a liveable condition the house is without an occupant.

1990 Source: Evalyn Tygrets Notes:(western Branning Historian) I have a handwritten note from Granger Branning. It says the Bairds were given a grant 16 miles long on the Jersey side of the Delaware River. They manufactured wagons and were blacksmiths. Jacob Branning [Jr.] married Keturah Baird, who had a twin sister. Her sister's name was Kathyrn (Katherine). Chester I. Branning, my grandfather left Penna. in 1878 and came to Illinois. Didn't go back for 25 years, until 1903. According to Lucian Branning, my Uncle and Chester's son.

From News-Times Nbg. NY 21Sep1967 article "From the Mail Box" by Arthur N. Meyers: Aaron Baird [1820-1887 son of Parkes Baird,Sr.] who once owned some of the Barkley Lake property is said by Mr. Metzermacher to have some Delaware Indian ancestry. He gave the right to use the Lake to Mr. Kuen. [1824-1905] ( Mr. & Mrs. Kuen moved to this site when they first came from Germany and Mr. Kuen built the house. It must be remembered that this was the day before concrete and even stone quarries. Many of the early Germans who immigrated to this country especially from the southern part of Germany were adept in stone masonry. They built many stone arch bridges, an attempt is being made to preserve the double arch bridge near Jeffersonville.)

The stone house on Camp St. Basil property is well over 100 years old. It was built by Leonard Kuen, a master craftsman in stone. He was a grandfather of Mrs. C. H. Mangels and John Metzermacher. This name translated from the old German means knife maker. many old German names have been Anglesized. The family name of Schneider has been shortened to Snyder and even Tayler means a tailor. The house in question is built of field stones and the walls are at least 3 foot thick. Needless to say, the small one story structure is as substantial as it was a century ago. Up until 7 or 8 years ago it was used as a cottage by one of the Lithuanian families at the camp, who stay on the Barkley (Baird Pond) Lake property for the summer. The Camp St. Basil property takes in the Leonard Barkley estate and the recently acquired additional property from Clarence Rice. This was the former Comfort tract. There was a question about the boundaries in the lake and rather than become involved in border disputes, the camp management bought the Rice property at a substantial price.

Barkley Lake (formerly Baird Pond) is a beautiful body of water and for the most part it is spring fed. The lake was once considered as a source of water supply for Narrowsburg. It has been a good fishing lake for a long time. It was apparent that the Delaware or Lenni Lenape Indians considered it good fishing ground also. When they fished in the peaceful Delaware Valley many years ago they established a camp on the east side of the lake. Dr. Max Scrabiscsh in his book "Archaeology of Delaware River Valley" published by the Pennsylvania Historical commission in 1930 has the following to say. "There are traces of a fishing camp on the eastern shore of Lake Barkley, [formerly Baird Pond] a mile and a half from the river. Considerable camp refuse, indicative of several fishing sites occurs on the extensive meadow lands between mountain and river, a mile north of Narrowsburg." Father Orest is interested in placing a historic marker near this old Indian campsite. By Arthur N. Meyers

re my photo supposedly of Parks Baird Sr.. Karlyn Shedlowski decided it couldn't be Parks Baird Sr. & Sarah Ann Lassley, as it was too early in time for photographs. It could be Parks Barid Jr. even though he died a few short years after his father in 1859, he would have been around age 50 in the photo, with his wife Sarah Ann Young. My photo originally came from the files of Chester Branning son of Keturah Baird Branning, passed down to Lucian and his 2 children Morland & Evelyn Branning, the family Historian; so the photo probably is one of Parks Baird sons, those are the best possibilities to identify the individuals in the photo.

Have photo of Willliam Porter Baird & Phebe Raine, probably taken about 1860 near the time of their marriage. Carol Ogranko identifies photo of William Porter Baird & wife Phebe Raines taken c. 1860 by comparing other family photographs. (It is not previously wrongly labeled photo of Parks Baird & Catherine Lassley) May 27, 2017.

After contacting many Branning relatives in 2012, I finally located the person who had the images of the Beard/Baird Bible, but no one knew anything about the whereabouts of the original bible. This person was kind enough to send the Bible images to me in Oct 2012.. Her name is Karen Mae Branning ,d/o Morland P. Branning, (bros/o Evelyn J. from Perry Streeter Jan 2013: Bairds The Citizen, Friday, Dec. 11, 1911 Hawley, PA Dec.7 D. J. Branning is the possessor of a milk bench of antiquated origin, used by his great-grandfather, Parks Baird, 100 years ago. He was the only wheelwright at that time in the northeastern part of Pennslvania turning out wheels by the slow hand process. He was kept very busy travelling about with his tools over his back through what was then a wild, unsettled country. Mr. Baird owned a large tract of land but little cultivated at that time, situated two miles from the village of Narrowsburg. Upon this tract is that most beautiful and picturesque natural lake of pure spring water now called "Barkley's Lake," named after its present owner, Simon Barkley. The Baird tract of land was divided into several farms and sol, a portion being kept by the family and their ancestors, until about twelve years ago the last survivors sold out to the above named gentleman from New York city. The subject of my sketch was born at Freehold, New Jersey. His father was born in Scotland and with a brother were unwilling emigrants to this country at a time when seafaring life had few if any charms for the average young man and these brothers were stolen and smuggled onto the vessel. Upon landing here one migrated to Michigan and the other one found a home in New Jersey. Mr. Branning procured the work bench of Park Briads (Bairds) grandson, Amos Baird, who recently sold his property on the East Side and also disposed of his household furnishings, etc., on Wednesday last.

per Perry Streeter: Source 260: That Parks was born in Mar. 1779 is documented in Canaan Vital Records, Town Clerk's Office, Falls Village, Conn., A:34; original reviewed by the author 18 Apr. 2013 and photocopy in his possession. That Parks was born on 11 Mar. 1779 is documented in longstanding transcriptions of records on the family group of Parks and Sarah (Lassley) Baird that appear to have been removed from an otherwise unknown Bible. With frequent use of the phrases, "my son" and "my daughter," the entries-all in the same hand-were recorded by Parks or Sarah. Digital images thereof were relayed to the author by Beverly (Branning) Green from Karen Mae Branning; they are challenging to read , but it may be possible that Parks was born on 12 or 22 Mar. 1779 instead of 11 Mar. 1779. Despite the fact that the family surname is consistently spelled Beard therein, these records are cited as Baird-Lassley Bible hereinafter, in alignment with the spellings primarily used by the family. ______________________________________________________________________

BEARD-BAIRD FAMILY BIBLE transcription: +Probably written 1803- 1818, so if Bible still exists would be over 200 years old; pages look to be old and worn when photocopied probably by Evalyn Branning Tygret in the 1980's. When the land was acquired for Overlook Cemetery about 1821 at the time when the new church was chartered (present day church), there was no church and nobody was buried there. The deed came from William Penn's grandson, but I have to look in the Courthouse for the deed, if we need it. When the land was acquired to charter the new church in 1821, and the church was built, they moved all of the bodies from the previous location just up the hill from the old church location to the present church location to Overlook Cemetery (right near the present day church). Overlook is not a community cemetery; it is for charter members (old cemetery people, prior to 1821), other members, and members of extended family of church members. The community cemetery in Damascus is Hillside Cemetery, up the hill from the Baptist Church. This one is the Methodist Cemetery, but not all people buried there are Methodists.per KLS

This is from the church historian via a phone call tonight. Hope this answers your question. The earliest people buried in the cemetery would have been the charter members who were moved from the previous cemetery where the 1800 church "house" was located to the new church location about 1821. Thus, we can be very confident that: The father of Parks Baird and his siblings was indeed Aaron [4] Beard (Aaron[3], John[2], Andrew[1]). The full name of Ai [5] Beard, recorded at Salisbury as Alfrost, Atrost, and Aifrost (?) must have been Ai Frost Beard-his middle name was derived from the maiden surname of his paternal grandmother, Susannah (Frost) Beard. It's not surprising that Aaron Beard chose to honor his mother's family in this manner; Susannah was the granddaughter of Dr. Samuel2 Frost and Dr. John2 Kittredge.

Now that we have established that Ai Frost Beard was named in honor of his paternal grandmother's maiden surname, we can also be reasonably confident that Parks Baird's distinctive given name honored the maiden surname of his mother, Lucy. We have also established that Aaron Beard was a native of Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Thus, we have a highly likely (but unproven!) match for Lucy (Parks?) Beard/Baird, reportedly born in 1746 (grave marker), as Lucy[4] Parks (Ephraim[3], Richard[2-1]), born in Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts on 14 March 1747, daughter of Ephraim [3] and Mary (Hobbs) Parks; granddaughter of LT. Richard [2] and Elizabeth (Billings) Parks; and great-granddaughter of Richard [1] and Mary (Cutler) Parks. In the scholarly Great Migration series, Mary (Cutler) Parks is identified as the daughter of James1 and Ann (-) Cutler; however, her husband, Richard Parks of Cambridge, Sherborn, Concord and Weston, Massachusetts, is also disproved as the son of Richard1 Park of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Thus, we are uncertain if Richard[1] Parks, husband of Mary Cutler, descends from an as-yet undetermined immigrant or if he was an immigrant himself.

Chenango County, New York [but not before 2013]) Is there deed for Aaron Beard that identifies his residence prior to Chenango County? Is there a deed for Ai Beard that identifies his residence prior to Chenango County? Was Aaron Beard enumerated in the 1825 New York State Census in Greene, Chenango County? (Available only in Chenango County!) Is there an intestate settlement for Aaron Beard? Are there deeds for Aaron Beard, Lucy Beard and/or Ai Beard that may reveal when Aaron died? Is there room on either side of Lucy's grave for Aaron Beard to possibly be buried next to her? If yes, can a marker for Aaron be re-discovered through shallow excavation?

3/26/13 by Karlyn First let me note that the earliest known spelling we have of the "Lassley" surname is "Lassly" as written by both sons of John Lassly of Voluntown, CT. Just a little tidbit. Perry, I can send you as much background information on John Lassly (perhaps the immigrant ancestor) of Voluntown that I have, and his wife Katherine McCane, should you desire it. I have searched for years for his origins on my own and through professional genealogists. We know he was a Congreationalist, married 1740 in Newport, Rhode Island to Katherine McCane (Irish for the Scots surname McEwen). I can send you hundreds of source documents that I have searched for their origins and the results of my paid research. The only dates I have on record are their marriage date and place, and two deeds from Voluntown dated 1755-1756. After that he disappears. The only mention of Katherine, his wife, is on her marriage record and the birth of their two recorded sons, James, 1742 and John, 1743. I have already sent, and Beverly probably passed along, information about their migration across CT in the French and Indian War. I can send family group sheets for both of these men if you wish with time lines and all I know. So today, I tried to address the questions you asked, why did they go to Greene Co., NY and how did Sarah Ann Lassly and Parks Baird meet? Well of course, there are no perfect answers. Regarding Greene County: This county was heavily engaged in the tanning business because of the vast number of hemlock trees there, which by the way, they almost totally eradicated by stripping them alive and taking the tannin from the bark to tan hides. Northampton Co., PA, now Wayne Co, was heavily engaged in the logging business and some tanning. They harvested their pines trees until they nearly denuded the mountains here. But, our first clue of possibly why the Lasslys went to Greene County, was that they most likely migrated across this area to come to Damascus, and therefore were familiar with it. According to Matthews, "History of Wayne, Pike and Monroe Counties," page 452, when Indian troubles broke out here, "Solomon Decker, Grasham Smith, John Lashley, and Daniel Skinner moved to more settled parts of the country." Our problem is that we don't know whether that was Greene County specifically or not. We do know, if we examine the censuses of both Greene, and Northampton, that their same surnames show up in both. Now regarding how did the Lasslys and the Bairds meet? I have reviewed my research for the area near Litchfield. I went there and I suggest the Litchfield Historical Society, and the Town Clerk and the Court Records, but I did not find any records of any Lasslys there. If you find anything, please share, as I would have liked more time there. However, I do know that James Lassly, brother of John, moved to the area near Woodbury, CT., after the French and Indian War. I have searched the war records for James and John and was unable to find their enlistment places or where their superiors were from, and where their service was located. I've done this more than twice. I could only turn up one record, which I sent to Beverly, stating that one of their captains was from Litchfield, so perhaps that is how James settled in this area. According to the Vital Records of Woodbury, CT., he married Martha Wheeler in Woodbury, CT on April 24, 1766. From 1769 through Jan. 29, 1772, James bought land in the "Northern Tier" of Woodbury, CT, which actually puts his residence closer to either Judea or Bethlehem, CT. Beginning April 1772 through 1773. he divested himself of most of his land and moved to Westmoreland Co., CT, which is now Luzerne Co., PA. By my calculations, he purchased 74 acres of land and sold 63.75 acres of land at a loss of about 0.45 pounds an acre. Shortly after this, in 1774, he is involved in the government of Westmoreland Co (Luzerne, PA), now being a member of the Susquehanna Company, which by the way, got its impetus in Windham Co., CT (ie Voluntown and Ashford area). He lives in this area until 1799, when he appears on the Freehold Tax Assessment list in Green Co., NY. I checked all the deeds and records I have for the above areas, looking for mention of your Bairds, as in neighbors, government records, tax lists, and everything else, and found nothing. However, it is curious what happened to the last 11 acres of land in Judea or Bethlehem, CT. It is my theory, that perhaps his father, John was with him, and perhaps his brother John too, but neither are mentioned anywhere I could find. So where is John Lassly who married Sarah Tyler from the end of his service on Dec. 1, 1761, in the French and Indian War, to the first written record of him in Damascus Township, Northampton, PA? This first record comes from Matthews, mentioned above, were in 1772, he is recorded as being in Cushetunk, Damascus, Northampton, PA, where four individuals signed a statement about Daniel Skinner. These were: Nicholas Conklin, John Lassley, Elizabeth Conklin, and William Conklin. (Matthews, page 450). We have various stories that John may have been present in Damascus in the late 1760s, but nothing concrete. That seems a bit odd to, if his brother was still living in Woodburg, CT. Beers, FW, Atlas of Wayne Co., Pomeroy & Co., NY, 1872, pp 4, 5, 10, list the Warrantees for Damascus Twp. Warrantee 105 was William Baird, whose tract appears to be half in Damascus and half in Lebanon Twp., about 7 miles directly west and slightly north of John Lassly's tract # 176. Neighbors nearer John Lassley were Aaron Thomas, Samuel Taylor, John Land, Moses Thomas, Solomon Decker, Benjamin Brink, and John Jenkins. The date of the request for survey of the Warrant Tract of John Lassly was Sept. 26, 1787. I do not know the exact date he became Warrantee. I am aware of something called the "five mile rule," that back in those days men married woman who were convenient to their location, and probably within a five mile radius. The William Baird tract almost fit that "bill" but I am not sure of the relationship or who was living there. In the meantime, I had asked a researcher for Northampton Co. to search the Tax Assessment Records at the Northampton Co. Archives in Easton for Upper Smithfield Township (this would take us from Stroudsburg, PA into Pike County, PA and up through Milford, PA). I requested information on the surnames, Lassly, Baird, Beamer, and Salisbury from 1784 through 1779, looking for any nearby relatives: 1784 - James Lashly, 2 cattle and 1 horse 1785: John Byard, 0.0.2 pounds 1785: James Lasly 0.0.5 pounds 1793: John Byard 0.1.8 pounds 1795: John Byard 0.1.8 pounds 1796: John Byard, 2 cattle, 1 building 1797: John Byard, $0.14 1798: John Byard $0.14 After 1798, Upper Smithfied Township was no longer part of Northampton Co. James Lashley could be the brother of OUR John or someone else, as there were Lashleys from Philadelphia. I am uncertain who John Byard was. In the meantime, Beverly had records from the PA Archives for 1798 for the US Direct Tax List (#372, Roll 12) for Damascus. In an email she sent to me June 3, 2010, she mentions Simeon Bush, William and Thomas Baird, John Brown, Reuben Decker and Solomon Decker. Then she gives an accounting of John Lasley and Lany Lasley, his daughter-in -law (her husband Cornelius Lasley, John's son drowned in 1797). Next she mentions Reuben, Daniel and Joseph Skinner, and John Land and James Wilson. Now in Green County, NY, the purchase of land by John Lassley from Luther Carter, at an unknown date, shows up in the Catskill Court, Recorder of Deeds, Catskill, NY DB C:339, where the chain of title is given as John grants this land to his son-in-law, Parks Baird, on April 9, 1807. James Lashley, and his son James, are found on the 1800 Freehold Census, Green Co., NY living next to Luther Carter. John Lassley is also present there, age 45 or older, with 2 females age 10-16 and Sarah, over 45. In the previous information I sent to Beverly, I noted that John Lassly belonged to the Delaware Company, a sister company to the Susquehanna Company, and that he was also found in Westmoreland Co (Luzerne, back and forth between there and Damascus). Both he and his brother seemed aimed toward Green County, moving there at almost the same time. Both were engaged in the same business, settling Connecticut land claims, and farming. John was also in the Revolution, but James was not; he was active in government. Since John moved back and forth between Wayne and Luzerne also, I checked for Bairds in relation to his being in Luzerne but still found nothing. In Freehold in 1800 though, we find evidence of Warren and Phineas and Elisha Tyler. In 1820 we have Silas Tyler, George Brown, John Lashley and the Skinners and Calkins, all names from Connecticut, from Damascus, and Luzerne Co. So how did Sarah Ann Lassly and Parks Baird meet? Well, it's hard to say, but it is obvious that people with the same surnames lived in the same general area in Connecticut, although Woodbury and Litchfield would have different houses of worship. The same is true in Wayne County, their relatives lived somewhat near each other. I wish I could give you a definitive answer, but the answer is, these people moved many times, many places, and they moved in flocks, so it happened that they were somewhere within 5 or so miles of each other at the proper courting age, and the rest is history. Comment 3 Parks-5 Baird (Aaron-4-3, John-2, Andrew-1) (1779-1852); CT > MA? > NY > PA Perry Streeter added this on 9 Jun 2014 Aaron-4 Beard Jr. (Aaron-3, John-2, Andrew-1) was born in Wilmington, Middlesex County, Massachusetts on 4 August 1742, the son of Aaron-3 Beard and Susannah-4 Frost (Edmund-2, Samuel-2, Edmund-1), who were primarily of Tewksbury, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Aaron-4 Beard Jr. was probably the Aaron Beard (also known as Bard and Baird) who migrated to Salisbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut by 1772; to Canaan, Litchfield County, Connecticut by 1779; to Sheffield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts by 1800 (and perhaps much earlier); to Oxford, Chenango County, New York by 1803; and to Greene, Chenango County, New York probably in 1814. The first installment has already appeared in the April 2014 issue; www.perrystreeter.com/beard.pdf will be updated as subsequent installments for the genealogical summary appear in print. The known children of Aaron and Lucy ([-?-]) Beard were: 1) Louisa Beard (1774- ), a probable match for Louisa ([-?-]) Streeter (ca. 1773-1844), wife of Thomas-1 Streeter of Steuben County, New York; 2) Ai Frost Beard (1777-1852) of Chenango County, New York and St. Clair County, Michigan; 3) Parks Baird (1779-1852) of Greene County, New York and Wayne County, Pennsylvania. Prior to collaboration that I initiated in October 2012, no one was aware of what happened to Aaron-4 Beard Jr. after he left Massachusetts, nor had the descendants of Ai Frost Beard and Parks Baird identified Aaron and Lucy as their most recent common ancestors. The reconstruction of this family group is a research breakthrough for the large American family that descends from Andrew-1 and Mary (Williams) Beard of Billerica, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. It is still unknown if Andrew-1 Beard was an immigrant and/or the descendant of an immigrant.
