About Patrick Henry McCarty, Jr.
Patrick Henry McCarty was born near the town of Kells, County of East Meath, Ireland, November 15th, 1832."Attended the Christian Brothers School of Kells one year, the only schooling he ever got and that between the ages of 11 and 12 he made some proficiancy in his studies as he past a succesful examination in Double Intry Book Keeping and mensuration.
In 1845 his father Patrick with a family of 10 children [7 boys 3 girls] came to the U.S. landing in New Orleans the 6th day of February 1846. Young Patrick went to work on the farm his father purchased in Daviess Co. Ind and worked on his fathers farm till 1856 and then went to California worked in the mines returned to Indiana in 1858 at the request of his parents.
In 1861 Married Elizabeth "Lizzie" B. Morgan daughter of James S. Morgan now of the English Hotel Indianapolis. In 1872 was elected Justice of the Peace for the corporation of Montgomery Daviess County Indiana. 1876 was the Democratic nominee for Representative and subsequently elected. Worked in the coal mines of Daviess County from 1877 to 1879. In 1879 declined being candidate for Mayor of Washington, Daviess County. knowning that my Nationality and religion Catholic would defeat me and the Democratic party.
In 1879 moved he moved the family from Indiana to Iowa in 1879. They went first to Fort Dodge, Iowa, and then to Walnut, Iowa. Patrick Henry's brother Mike McCarty and sister Margaret Mullin were farming there. Later Patrick H. and Elizabeth come on to Boyden, Iowa and after some time, they moved to the Carver.
In 1888 the McCarty's rented a farm west ot Hull, Iowa. Mrs. McCarty and Gertrude stayed there while Patrick Henry (with children Jim, Ann, and Vete) stayed at a rented house half a mile from the land they had bought two or three miles outside of Sheldon. The land was purchased from Baum and Brown Agency for $16.50 or $18.00 and acre. He built the family farm and barn and moved in about November of 1888.
