About Paul Bublic
ACCIDENT NO. 27 — March 6, 1909 – Paul Bublic, Red Jacket Shaft.
This accident, causing the death of Paul Bublic, occurred at the 64th level, No. 4 shaft.
An inquest was held and the following witnesses examined:
John Navone: “I know the man who was killed. I am a Timberman, he was a Trammer. I worked yesterday and put up timber in the place where he was killed. The place was alright when we left. We put up a prop about half past four last night right under the loose. I was not there when the ground came away. It was a cab between the vein and the hanging. There was only 6 or 7 feet from the timber to the prop. We tried this piece of ground with four bars and it would not come down. We thought it was safe enough, but to make doubly sure we put in this prop."
John Kalman: “I am a Trammer at the R. J. Shaft. I worked there last night. I knew Paul Bublic, he was a Trammer also and worked with me. He was filling the car when the hanging came down. The timber was right above where we were shoveling. We thought the place was alright.”
Verdict: “That the said Paul Bublic came to his death at the 64th level, South of No. 4 shaft, R. J. shaft, by a fall of rock on March 6, 1909.”
