University 1940-1943; served in the U.S. army during the Second World War; graduated, University of Denver 1949 and University of Denver Law School 1949; admitted to the Nevada bar in 1949 and commenced practice in Carson City; district attorney, Ormsby County, Nev., 1950-1954; city attorney, Carson City 1951-1954; Nevada lieutenant governor 1963-1967; Governor of Nevada 1967-1971; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate November 5, 1974, for the six-year term commencing January 3, 1975; subsequently appointed by the Governor, December 18, 1974, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Alan Bible for the term ending January 3, 1975; reelected in 1980 and served from December 18, 1974, to January 3, 1987; did not seek reelection in 1986; lawyer/consultant, practicing in Washington, D.C.; is a resident of McLean, Va.
