Paul, a sergeant in the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army, was one of the 5620 Dutch, English, Australian and American prisoners of war and Javanese slave labourers who perished aboard the Japanese SS Junyo Maru when it was torpedoed, on 18 September 1944 off the south west coast of Sumatra, by the British submarine HMS Tradewind.
