3 Marion Residents Killed In Accident

By The Associated Press

Three members of a Marion family killed in a collision Wednesday and the death of a truck driver today jumped the state's 1965 traffic fatality toll nearly 90 ahead of the corresponding period last year.

The head-on crash 13 miles north of Noblesville on Ind. 37 killed Joseph W. Artherhults, 37; his son, Kevin, 5, and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Pauline O. Tinkle, 62.

Artherhults' wife, Helen, 34, and the pickup truck driver, Jerry W. Richards, 27, Marion, were hospitalized. Richards was listed in serious condition with fractured ribs and lacerations. Mrs. Artherhults was reported in good condition at Mercy Hospital, Elwood, with cuts.

Two other accidents Wednesday claimed the lives of Daniel Martz, 46, Muncie, and Mrs. Ruth Stevens, 45, Edinburg.

Dan Miller, 46, R. 5, Kokomo, died today when crushed in the cab of his truck. State police said a car driven by Marlene Wallace, 25, Knox, swerved in front of Miller's truck causing it to veer off U.S. 30 and into a ditch about 4 miles east of Wanatah. A load of cobalt metal pellets ripped into the cab. The auto driver wasn't hurt.

The state police radiological field unit was sent to the scene to test the cobalt's radioactivity.

A Terre Haute fireman, John R. Clatfelter, 29, died Wednesday night when his car slammed into a freight train at the northside Terre Haute crossing. His wife, JoAnn, 28, was taken to Union Hospital, Terre Haute, with injuries.

The train's engineer, Ralph Carter, 47, of ALton, Ill., said the flashers were working but Clatfelter didn't stop at the crossing.

The deaths boosted this year's count to 446.
