12 APR 2019 10:23:50 GMT -0500 1910 Norway Census MyHeritage
This inclusion of full birth dates for most people makes the 1910 census a genealogically important substitute national birth index for Norway in 1910. This was also the first census conducted following the dissolution of Norway’s union with Sweden in 1905. Following this dissolution of its union with Sweden, Norwegian society underwent a period of significant national pride. As a result, many of the municipality and city names associated with Danish or Swedish rule were replaced with more traditional Norwegian names. For example, the capitol, Kristiania, originally named after Danish King Christian IV, was renamed Oslo in 1924.

The many changes to the names and borders of municipalities in Norway can present significant obstacles for genealogists. Detailed information about border and name changes within Norway can be found at the National Archives of Norway.

Digitized images for the 1910 Norway Census are not currently available and have never been microfilmed or digitized by the National Archives of Norway. This collection is composed of transcribed index records provided in cooperation with the National Archives of Norway.
Collection 10732

12 APR 2019 10:37:49 GMT -0500 1900 Norway Census MyHeritage
Following a precedent that was established with the census taken in 1891, this census used civic municipalities rather than parishes as the census districts for rural areas of Norway. The 1900 census continued to increase the information collected regarding living arrangements but is otherwise very similar in the information it collected to the previous 1891 Norway Census. It is important to note that most people enumerated in this census will not have a full birth date (but rather a birth year only) because full birth dates were not collected for individuals over the age of two.

Motivation for the change from the individual forms of the 1891 census to the household lists used in 1900 was the use of the Herman Hollerith Tabulating Machine. First used with much success in the 1890 US Federal Census, many other countries, including Norway, adopted the technology for their own censuses. Information was transferred from census documents to punch cards which were then run through tabulating machines thus significantly reducing processing time traditional performed by clerks.

Municipality names and borders have changed significantly since this census was completed. The names of municipalities in this index may have spellings and borders that do not match current municipalities. Detailed information about municipality changes may be found through the National Archives of Norway

Additional information not present in the index, such as occupation, can be found on the digital images. Approximately 17% of the records in this index have not yet been associated with their digital image of the household schedule. Searching for a record in the index without an associated image will return the index and show the other persons in the household but an image will not be displayedon the individual record page in these cases.

While the 1900 census papers were well archived and preserved the following deficiencies in the original material are known: Bærum district in Akershus (Vestre Bærum parish, 3,219 resident individuals), Risør trading center in Aust-Agder (two of three areas, 2,249 resident individuals), Sirdal district in Vest-Agder (all areas, 1,644 resident individuals), Skien trading center in Telemark (parts of areas 1-29 and all of areas 30-35, approximately 3,000 resident individuals), Tysnes district in Hordaland (3,589 resident individuals).

This collection is provided through cooperation with the National Archives of Norway.
Collection 10731
