Information from "Background History of the Lyon Family," by Bessie Lyon (1873-1961). Also, a biographical sketch is given in "Peter Lyon," a document (author unknown) taken from the "Biographical Record and Portrait Album," pp 375 and 366. Kendal Young Library, Webster City, written around 1890. REFN: 2 JAN 2014 22:53:36 According to the background history, Peter and family appear in the 1860 Federal Census for Hamilton County, Iowa. Mae Butler possessses pictures of Peter and his wife Margaret; xerox copies of these pictures are in my records. REFN: 2 JAN 2014 22:53:36 From "Early Settlers of Hamilton County" (author unknown), compiled from Lee's 1912 History and Bessie Lyon's 1946 History of Hamilton County: REFN: 2 JAN 2014 22:53:36 Wilson Brewer and William Stanley arrived early in the fall of 1850 and settled near Bones Mill, about six miles south of Webster City. Wilson Brewer staked out a claim just south of the mill site and Mr. Stanley located his claim a short distance up the river from the site and built his house on the east side of the river and cleared a truck patch on the west side. After occupying this claim for about a year, Stanley sold it to Peter Lyon in 1851, when Peter, his brother Isaac, and their families came to Hamilton Co. Isaac Lyon took a claim on the east side of the Boone River, near a creek that emptied into the river. Peter liked this location better than the one he had purchased from Stanley, so in June, 1852, he traded land with Isaac, paying 120 dollars cash, a yoke of young catle, a few pounds of wool, and a 15 gallon copper kettle. At that time a metal kettle was much prized and ithad been a family possession for some years; afterwards, Peter thought he had given a copper kettle too much! The small creek upon which the cabin was built soon became "Lyon Creek," just as the more southerly stream became "Brewer Creek."' REFN: 2 JAN 2014 22:53:36 Peter and Margaret (and apparently also daughter Mary Ann) moved to Jefferson County, Kansas, in 1868. Margaret died in Feb 1885. In April 1889 Peter returned to Hamilton Co., and lived with his son Jotham until his death. He is buried in Graceland Cemetery in Webster City. REFN: 2 JAN 2014 22:53:36 Information supplied by Miriam Butler Bondhus via Doris Lyon Jones gives birthplace as Ohio, and date of death as 2/21/1897. REFN: 2 JAN 2014 22:53:36
