About Peter S. Grogan Speck

Peter Gargon Speck story shared by tflorom

PETER GARGON was born May 15, 1879 at Strawberry Point, Clayton County, Iowa to PETER and ANNA SARAH [HANSON] GARGON. His father had came here from Germanv and did not like the United States shortly after PETER’S birth he decided to return to Germany. ANNA chose not to go with him so she and young PETER stayed in lowa and then moved to Elwood Nebraska where she met Frank Speck and married him in 1882.

PETER had 11 half brothers and sisters. Although there was only 3 1/2 years between he and the next child PETE never had any schoolng. He could neither read or write. All the rest of the children were educated. Circa 1890 they moved to Lexington, Nebraska Two children died in infancy.

PETE married Mary Elsie Devin August 12, 1903 in Lexington, Dawson County, Nebraska. They lived in Dawson County north of Farnam. He mainly farmed although he had a livery stable in Farnam for a short time. Five of their children were born here. The third of their children a littie boy named Glenwood died of blood poisoning at 13 1/2 months. They moved to lngham in 1913 where 2 more children were born. it is my understanding that he was a hard worker and a very kind man.

During the depression he had borrowed money from the Farnam Bank and a North Platte Bank which put a double mortgage on the cattle. When the Farnam Bank found out they threatened to send him to the pen. When they left that day he went out to the barn and hung himself, where MARY found him.

JACK always thought he could have beat the charges where he could neither read or write He is buried at Farnam.
