About Peter ne Josef/Joseph Tarler

Biography on page 105 and 106 of Medina va-chachameha : Toledot kol ha-hachamim ve-has-soferim Written by: Gershom Bader Published in Austria & New York, 1934. (see under media) Lviv = Lemberg
“A History of Jewish Literature: The science of Judaism and Galician Haskalah” by Israel Zinberg Page 92 and 93..
While Count Joseph Sedlnitzky ran the Empire’s “Supreme Police and Censorship Office” from 1817–1848, the Lemberg censor was Peter (né Joseph) Tarler, a teacher of the maskil Isaac Erter before his conversion
"2 of Shvat 5,554 (3 January 1794), in Gologory – 23 of Tevet 5,614 (23 January 1854) in Lvov.
Josef Tarler, Lemberg.
A scholar and a learned man from an important family who married a daughter of one of the Rabbis. He once insulted the Rabbi of Belz, who ordered his father-in-law to expel him from his house. He left, and his wife left with him because she didn't want to divorce her husband. This became public knowledge and it was known that he "went the wrong path". He became a German teacher in the rich houses in Lviv.
Later there was a trial between one of the Jewish merchants and a Polish nobleman who demanded a large sum of money, a debt to his father. Tarler wanting to save this Jew, forged receipts in the name of the nobleman's father. When the forgery was discovered, Tarler was captured and awaited a hard punishment...
He fell before the nobleman and asked for mercy. The nobleman agreed if he converted to his religion. Then he converted together with his wife and daughters. Later he was appointed by the government as the chief censor of Hebrew books. While in this position he wouldn't allow any Hassidic books published in Galicia. He was also the last converted censor in the country.
Despite his conversion, he frequently met with Lviv scholars and the Sha"h(?) Rabbi. When a group of scholars led by A.M. Mohr and Jacob Bodek, organized to publish a series of books opposing the publications of other scholars, Tarler anonymously published several articles. Most worth of mentioning and remembering is the article "Hasidim should celebrate honorably", which could be read in straight and reverse order. If it is read in the order of writing, it is full of praises for the Hassidim, when it is read bottom up it is full of contempt and curses.
