About Petrus Tavenrath
From Rheinberg, Germany, Adelbors in 1705, sieketrooster 1708-10. x 19 April 1711 Helena Bezuidenhout, wid Jan Wessels of Hamburg. Burger 1711, wife died 1713. 1718 he was on request apppointed sieketrooster on ship Amsterdam for 3 years. Kolbe (II, p 406) tells that he was also teacher of children of W.A. vd Stel and after latter's discharge he was also involved with a school in Cape Town teaching Latin and ordinary subjects; also gave private lessons, amongst others to children of governor d'Ablaing. When attendance became too large he could not continue private tuition to governor's children, the latter prohibited him to teach any other subjects but Latin well knowing that there was little or no need for this at the Cape. Besides he ordered T to reside in the castle to say the evening prayers for the garrison and teach the company's servants so the the burgers had to look for another teacher.(GMR 1705, 1708-10; Rq.
