About Philip Henry Bader

Philip enlisted three times in three different army regiments during the Civil War. First, he served at a 3 month enlistment as a private in Company K, 19th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, April 1, 1861-August 1, 1861. Secondly, he enlisted at Mansfield, OH for a term of 3 years as 1st Sergeant, Company I, 65th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry from October 11, 1861 until discharged for medical reasons, August 31, 1862, at Bridgeport, Alabama. Thirdly, apparently after regaining his health, he enlisted in Company B, 10th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, October 11, 1862 for a term of 3 years. He was appointed Quartermaster Sergeant, February 10, 1863. Captured August 19, 1864 he was held at Andersonville prisoner of war stockade until paroled and released in 1865. He survived the explosion and sinking of the river steamboat, Sultana, April 27, 1865 on the Mississippi River near Memphis Tennessee but injured three fingers and thumb, all of which had to be amputated. He was discharged by Order of the U.S. War Department, May 20, 1865. His name is on Panel #10 for his service in the 65th O.V.I., in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' & Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio. See www.soldiersandsailors.com.
