Dr. Philip Davis of Willow Valley, Lancaster, and formerly a long-time resident of Reading, died at Lancaster General on March 18, 2008 following a brief illness. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Ellen (Baraff) Davis. He is survived by his sons Glenn and Bruce, both of Lancaster, and Wayne, of Carlisle, Massachusetts.
Dr. Davis was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1929, son of the late Abraham and Ruth Davis, and grew up in Newark, NJ. After graduating from Rutgers University and the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, he served in the US Army at Ft. Dix. He then established a private optometric practice in Reading, which was well-known for its friendly and innovative service. Working with the local council of the AFL-CIO, he established the "Eye Care Plan" which brought high quality, affordable coverage to thousands of union members and their families throughout the 1960's and 70's. Later, he established Total Vision Care, which operated retail optical centers in Allentown, Lancaster, and York.
In retirement, Dr. Davis actively supported the Berks County Chapter of NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, serving on its Board of Directors and offering advice and encouragement to many families. More recently, he volunteered as a fundraising advisor and goodwill ambassador for Faith Friendship Ministries, a mental-health residential ministry. He was also active in the World Affairs Council and enjoyed sport fishing and water-skiing.
Funeral services will be private.
Donations in memory of Dr. Davis may be made to: Faith Friendship Villa, PO Box 567, Mountville, PA 17554 or to NAMI Berks County, PO Box 6642, Wyomissing, PA 19610.
