Flippie (28), a fireman from Springs, and a karate expert, was shot dead when accosted by two armed men at the Popular Karate Club, on Saturday 11th December 1999.
Flippie was with his brother-in-law, Ernst (25), that night when they were leaving the club, when a man threw Ernst against the wall. Ernst told the men to be careful as Flippie was good at karate. Flippie helped him up and they went to their car, and one of the other men asked who the karate man was. Two shots were fired at Flippie which hit him in the stomach.
Flippie's wife, Blackie, said' "He only had enough time to ask his brother-in-law to look after me and the children before he died.
The two perpetrators fled the scene. One of the shooters was arrested the following morning, and the other one on Monday morning, both in Benoni.
The motive for the murder is unknown.
