Philip, it seems, came by his lordship of Iscoed through his marriage to Catherine.
This is probably supposed to be Philip ap Ifor ap Cadifor ap Gwaithfoed, born c. 1190, supposedly married at one time to Angharad, daughter (by a mistress) of Llewellyn ap Iorwerth (aka Llewellyn Fawr or "Llewellyn the Great"). Angharad, however, is also recorded as having married Maelgwn ap Maelgwn (Maelgwn Fychan) and having four children by him. (Those few records that claim that Angharad married Philip also state that they had no children.)
The marriage situation in Wales was much less hard-and-fast than in England or Europe, with both parties able to obtain a divorce under specific conditions, and property reassigned under various rules depending on who divorced whom, for what reasons, how long the marriage had lasted, and whether adultery was involved. (The laws of Hywel Dda provided that a husband could get a divorce on his wife's first offense, the wife after her husband's third. A woman could initiate a divorce and reclaim all her property if her husband neglected/abandoned her, if he was impotent, if he had leprosy, or if he had bad breath....)
So was Philip Angharad's first husband, and did she dump him because of halitosis? Or was Catherine Philip's first wife, and did he and Angharad get together in their late years after they were both widowed? (Maelgwn Fychan died in 1257; Angharad was reported alive as late as 1260. No information is available on Philip or Catherine.)
Two other branches of this family eventually took the surname Lloyd (Llwyd); this one appears to have daughtered out.
