About Phillippe Boudemont

Phillip Boudemont was born in Muhlofen in the German Palatinates near Rohrbach on July 28, 1685. Phillip was married to Maria Magdalene Buchell in about 1707 in Rohrbach. They lived in Rohrbach, Kreis Berggzabern, Germany. Phillip died in Rohrbach January 27, 1762. Maria was born in 1686 in Minfeld and died in Rohrbach March 5, 1741.

The early history of the family by Dick Heller, of Mission, Texas and Patricia McKinna of Houston, Texas, as well as by Bettie Cornell of Frederick, Maryland, and by Bill and Betty Eynon were able to begin to sort out the early history of this part of the family.

The first of the family to arrive in the States was Andrew or Andreas, on the ship "Osgood", through Philadelphia, on September 29, 1750. Philip arrived on the ship, the "Phoenix", from Rotterdam, Germany, through Portsmouth, England.

The early Boudemonts were French Huegenots, who fled across the border into Germany in the early 1600's. The Huegenots, forced from France for their religious beliefs, fled just across the border to the German Palatinates region of Southwest Germany, just across the border from France. The earliest member of the family that could be traced was Philips(Phillippe's) and Andrew's(Andreas') father, JACOB BOUDEMONT.

As with many early settlers on this continent, our early ancestors could barely, if at all, read or write, and on entry through our ports, their names were recorded as they sounded phonetically in early deeds and papers by English speaking clerks, The early French spelling, Boudemont or Boutemont, was Germanicised on arrival in the Palatinates as Buttman, and on arrival to early America, quickly Anglicized to Puttman or Putman, as the German, "B" sounded like the English, "P".
